The Adafruit QT Py boards are a great way to realise very small microcontroller projects that can offer a lot of power - and now there's a way for you to turn lots of QT Py boards into powerful audio projects that are super small!

This BFF (Best Friend Forever) comes with a MicroSD card slot that can support up to 64GB of storage, as well as a 3-watt I2S amplifier for high-quality audio playback that fits on the back of your mini development board. In total, it uses the SPI port and 4 GPIO pins for card selection (CS) as well as I2S data, clock and left/right selection.

We call this the Adafruit Audio BFF - a "Best Friend Forever". As a kid you may have learnt about the "Buddy" system; well, this product is so similar! A board that takes care of your QT Py and gives it more capabilities.
This circuit board is designed to fit on the back of any QT Py or Xiao board. It can be soldered in place or made removable with pin and socket headers. On board is a MAX98357 audio amplifier and a picoblade compatible connector to connect a 4 or 8 ohm speaker. We use A1 for the audio data, A2 for the word selection clock and A3 for the bit clock. The SD card is connected via the SPI port: MOSI, MISO and SCK and A0 for card selection.

This pinout works with ESP32 series, nRF52840 and RP2040 chipset boards. It does not work with the ATSAMD21 'original' QT Py as these pins on the SAMD21 are not I2S capable. However, you could cut the traces and rewire them to connect to the I2S pads if desired - but personally we recommend just switching to an RP2040 QT Py.
We include some headers that you can solder to your QT Py.
