Wouldn't it be cool to control a small OLED display, read a colour sensor or just blink a few LEDs directly from your computer? Sure, you can program an Arduino or Trinket to communicate with these devices and your computer, but why can't your computer just communicate with these devices and sensors itself? Well, now your computer can communicate with the devices with the help of the Adafruit FT232H Breakout Board!

What can the FT232H chip do? This chip from FTDI is similar to their USB-to-serial converter chips, but adds a 'multi-protocol synchronous serial engine' that allows it to speak many common protocols such as SPI, I2C, serial UART, JTAG and more! There are even a handful of digital GPIO pins that you can read and write to do things like blink LEDs, read switches or push buttons, and more. The FT232H breakout is like a little Swiss army knife for serial protocols in your computer!

This chip is powerful and useful if you want to quickly iterate and test a device using I2C, SPI or simple general purpose I/O using Python (for example). There's no firmware to deal with, so you don't have to deal with "sending data to and from" an Arduino, which is then sent to and from" an electronic sensor or display or part.

As of 12 February 2020, we've given this venerable board a makeover! We now have a modern USB C connector on the board (instead of micro USB), an I2C switch to connect D1 and D2 for a simple I2C interface, a 3V current output pin up to 500mA, and a Stemma QT connector that allows you to connect any Stemma QT or Qwiic devices, sensors and displays. This revision is fully backwards compatible in terms of board size, mounting holes and pinout (the additional 3V/GND pins are located where there were none before and do not change the pinout, they can remain unconnected).

Light comes into the dark with Adafruit NeoPixel

One extremely popular product line from the company's broad portfolio is Adafruit NeoPixel. These nifty LED components come in a wide variety of designs and color temperatures.
