Adafruit I2S Amplifier BFF Add-On for QT Py and Xiao
Our QT Py boards are a great way to create very small microcontroller projects that offer a lot of power. Now we have a way to add an I2S 3-watt amplifier that provides high-quality audio playback and fits on the back of your mini development board. It uses only three GPIO pins that don't interfere with the I2C/UART or SPI port.

We call this the Adafruit I2S Amp BFF - a "Best Friend Forever". As a kid you may have been introduced to the "Buddy" system, well this product is so similar! A circuit board that supports the QT Py and gives it more capabilities. This board is designed to fit on the back of any QT Py or Xiao board. It can be soldered or made removable with pin and socket headers. On board is a MAX98357 audio amplifier and a picoblade compatible connector for connecting a 4 or 8 ohm speaker. We use A0 for the audio data, A1 for the word select clock and A2 for the bit clock. This pinout works with ESP32, nRF52840 and RP2040 chipset boards. It does not work with the ATSAMD21 'Original' QT Py as these pins on the SAMD21 are not I2S capable. However, you could cut the traces and rewire to connect the I2S pads if desired - but personally we recommend upgrading to an RP2040 QT Py.
