The TLV493D 3-axis magnetometer is a great little sensor for detecting magnets in 3D. The manufacturer Infineon even suggests using it for a joystick! You could also use it for other cool things like detecting objects that have magnets attached to them, like the lid of a box, or maybe a statue that unlocks your secret hiding place when you put it on your mantle?

The TLD493D excels at measuring magnetic fields nearby in three dimensions. It is not a good compass because it is not sensitive enough to detect the earth's magnetic field, but you can use it to track the movement of nearby magnets in three dimensions.

As usual, we have made the TLV easy to use by placing it on a breakout board together with the associated circuitry. A voltage regulator and logic level shift ensure that it can be used with a range of microcontrollers with 3.3V or 5V logic levels. We even give you a pin to use the excess 3.3V juice not needed by the TLV493D.

We've also equipped the breakout with SparkFun Qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors so you can use it with other similarly equipped boards without having to solder.
QT cableis not included. Since the TLV493D "talks" I2C, you only need two wires (in addition to the power supply) to connect it to your microcontroller, and you can share these pins with other I2C sensors. The manufacturer Infineon was kind enough to provide a library to use the sensor with Arduino, and we wrote one to use it with CircuitPython and Python for use on the Raspberry Pi and other Linux computers.
