The Adafruit VL53L4CD Time of Flight Sensor is another great time of flight distance sensor from ST from the VL5 chip series that is suitable for shorter distances. The sensor contains a very small invisible laser source and a matching sensor. The VL53L4CD can measure the "time of flight", i.e. the time it takes for the light to bounce back to the sensor. As it uses a very narrow light source, it can only determine the distance of the surface directly in front of it. Unlike sonar devices, which reflect ultrasonic waves, the "cone" that the sensor detects is very narrow. Unlike IR distance sensors that try to measure the amount of reflected light, the VL53 is much more precise and has no linearity issues or "double images" where you can't tell if an object is very far away or very close.

It is another "big sister" of the VL6180X ToF sensor and has a range of approximately 1 to 1300 mm: Basically, it combines the short range of the VL6180X, which can measure up to the housing of the sensor, with the longer range of the VL53L0X, which has a range of 50 to 1200 mm.
The sensor is small and can easily be used in any robotics or interactive project. Since it requires 2.8 V power and logic, we put the little guy on a breakout board with a regulator and level shift. You can safely use it with any microcontroller with 3-5 V power or logic. With the 3.3 V logic level of a Feather or Raspberry Pi or the 5 V level of a Metro 328 or Arduino Uno, this breakout is ready for most popular microcontrollers or SBCs. And since it handles I2C, you can easily connect it with two data lines plus power and ground.
And as if that wasn't enough, we also have SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT Connectors for the I2C bus, so you don't even have to solder. Just connect your favourite mic with a plug-and-play cable to get ToF data as fast as possible. If you don't want to solder, simply connect your favourite microphone, like the STM32F405 Feather with a STEMMA QT adapter cable. The Stemma QT connectors also mean that the VL53L4CD can be used with our various associated accessories. QT cable is not included, but we have a selection in the shop
Communication with the sensor is done via I2C with an API written by ST, here is an Arduino library with an example of the communication.
