BerryBase 16-channel PWM/servo driver board
The BerryBase 16-channel 12-bit PWM/servo driver board enables the control of up to 16 independent PWM outputs via an I2C interface. It is based on the PCA9685 chip, which has an integrated clock generator, which means that continuous control by the microcontroller is not required. Up to 62 of these boards can be connected in series via the I2C bus, resulting in a total capacity of up to 992 PWM channels. The connection is made via just two control lines (SDA/SCL), which is particularly advantageous for microcontrollers with limited GPIOs.

The PWM frequency is configurable, with a maximum output frequency of approx. 1.6 kHz. Each channel offers a resolution of 12 bits and is equipped with an integrated 220 Ohm resistor. The loads (e.g. servos, LEDs) are supplied with 3.3 V to 5 V via the separate V+ connection. The IC voltage (VCC) is supplied separately with 3.0 V to 5.5 V. There are 6 addressable solder bridges for addressing in the I2C network. The board contains a green operating LED ("power good" indicator), reverse polarity protection at the V+ input and a pre-assembled 100 µF electrolytic capacitor for voltage stabilisation.

The board is intended for use in projects with several simultaneously controlled servos or LEDs. Typical applications include robotic systems such as hexapods, mechanical art installations or large LED arrays where many PWM signals need to be generated independently of each other. Thanks to I2C communication, the board is also suitable for compact microcontroller environments. The integrated clock generator significantly reduces the load on the controller. The module generates precise PWM signals via 16 channels.

Operation takes place without permanent signal processing by the controller, which saves resources. Several modules can be cascaded via the I2C bus, allowing complex systems with a high number of channels to be realised. The V+ connection is used for the external power supply of the connected actuators. The control IC is supplied with power via VCC, independently of the load circuit. Addresses are assigned via 6 addressable solder bridges, which enable a unique address configuration in the bus.
