The BerryBase NodeMCU development board is based on the ESP-WROOM-32 module from the manufacturer Espressif and is equipped with an ESP32 microcontroller. The dual-core processor (Tensilica Xtensa LX6) operates at a clock frequency of up to 240 MHz and is supported by 520 KB of internal SRAM and an external 4 MB flash memory. The board has 38 pins, of which up to 34 can be used as GPIOs. It integrates WLAN in accordance with the 802.11 b/g/n standard and Bluetooth 4.2 (BR/EDR + BLE). A CP2102 USB-to-serial converter enables simple programming via the micro USB interface.
Power is supplied either via 5 V via micro USB or via 3.3 V on the board. The board supports numerous interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, I2S and CAN as well as special functions such as touch and Hall sensors, RTC and timers. Thanks to the open development environment, the board is compatible with various platforms such as the Arduino IDE, MicroPython, ESP-IDF and PlatformIO.
It is supplied without soldered pin headers, but two 19-pin headers are included. The combination of wireless communication, versatile inputs and outputs and a compact form factor with dimensions of approx. 51 × 25 mm makes the board suitable for a wide range of IoT and embedded projects. Typical applications include smart home components, sensor networks, wearables, remote data loggers and microcontroller web servers. As an MQTT client, the board can be integrated into complex IoT infrastructures.

In a direct comparison, the ESP32 is superior to the ESP8266 in almost all technical areas. The ESP32 has a dual-core processor with 240 MHz, while the ESP8266 only offers a single core with a maximum of 160 MHz. The ESP32 is also clearly ahead in terms of RAM with 520 KB SRAM compared to the 160 KB of the ESP8266. A decisive advantage of the ESP32 is the integrated Bluetooth functionality (version 4.2 with BLE), which is completely absent from the ESP8266.
In terms of inputs and outputs, the ESP32 is much more flexible with up to 34 usable GPIOs than the ESP8266 with around 11 usable pins. The number and quality of the analogue inputs is also significantly higher: the ESP32 has 18 channels with 12-bit resolution, whereas the ESP8266 only has a single 10-bit ADC. In addition, the ESP32 offers two 8-bit DACs, which the ESP8266 completely lacks. Other additional functions such as touch sensors or the CAN bus are also exclusive to the ESP32.
The ESP32 also stands out in terms of interface diversity. In addition to SPI, I2C and UART, it also supports I2S and CAN, which makes it much more versatile for professional applications. Although the power consumption of the ESP8266 is lower in deep sleep mode, the ESP32 offers higher overall performance and energy efficiency for more complex applications.
The ESP8266 is less expensive than the ESP32, which makes it attractive for simple, cost-sensitive WLAN projects. However, for more demanding IoT applications requiring computing power, interface diversity or Bluetooth, the ESP32 is the technically superior and future-proof choice.
