A really nice environmental sensor that is ideal for monitoring temperature, pressure and humidity indoors or even outdoors in a suitable enclosure. It's Raspberry Pi and Arduino compatible.

We use this sensor on our Enviro+ environmental monitoring board, but it's such a nice sensor we thought we'd put it on a breakout! The BME280 is a great sensor for monitoring conditions around your home.

For iOS users, there is a Homebridge plugin for the BME280 that allows you to use the sensor for home automation and monitoring.

It's compatible with our fancy breakout garden HAT, where using breakouts is as simple as plugging it into one of the six slots, creating projects and coding.

Kit contains

BME280 breakout

We have designed this breakout board so that you can solder on a right-angled female header and plug it directly into the bottom left 5 pins of your Raspberry Pi's GPIO header (pins 1, 3, 5, 6, 9). The right-angled header also has the advantage of positioning the breakout away from the Pi's CPU to minimise waste heat.

Software

We've put together a Python library for the BME280 sensor, with handy functions to read all the values, and some nice little examples of how to use it.

Notes

In our tests, we found that the sensor requires a certain burn-in time (at least 20 minutes) and that the readings take a few minutes to stabilise after measurements have started
The solder pads (labelled ADDR) can be bridged to change the I2C address from the default 0x76 to 0x77, which means you can use up to two sensors on the same Raspberry Pi or Arduino
The BME280, BME680 and BMP280 breakouts all share the same I2C addresses, so if you are using two together you will need to change the I2C address on one of them using the solder bridge/pads
