FAKRA Connector Basics
FAKRA areas of application
FAKRA plugs and FAKRA sockets are connectors for the automotive sector and are used in vehicle electronics for all types of vehicles. They are used, for example, to connect GSM mobile radio and GPS antennas or to transmit camera data. But they are also used in entertainment, such as radio and TV. FAKRA plugs and sockets are marked in a different colour for each application and are also mechanically coded. This prevents plugs and sockets from being plugged together incorrectly. The name comes from the FAchKReis automobile of the Rosenberger company. The colour scheme of FAKRA plugs and sockets is internationally standardised. The FAKRA sockets have a safety clip to protect against accidental disconnection.
FAKRA as a BIG DATA solution
The HSD digital connector system, as a high-speed data connector, is a great way to transmit LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) signals. By adjusting the ratio of the electrical voltage (impedance), the connector system ensures first-class transmission quality while preventing external sources of interference and crosstalk. The intelligent strain relief unit SSR (smart strain relief), allows the elimination of solder joint stress on the PCB connection. The feed wedge ribs in the mating area make the mechanical mating reliability and robustness super easy.
FAKRA colour coding
With up to thirteen different colour-coded and correspondingly mechanically coded markings, the FAKRA plug and socket are protected against plug confusion. This makes it easy for car mechanics and car hobbyists to work error-free. The fourteenth colour (water blue, FAKRA Z) is neutrally coded and can be used for all connections. FAKRA Z is accordingly a universal solution and can be adapted to all colours. The codings are designed for different signal types and applications. They have guide notches and can only be used for a specific signal type. Here is a selection of common FAKRA connections:
Coding (Typ): | Color Code | RAL number: | Cable outlet |
A | Jet Black | 9005 | left, bottom, right |
B | Cream White | 9001 | left, bottom, right |
C | Signal Blue | 5005 | left, bottom, right |
D | Bordeauxviolett | 4004 | left, bottom, right |
E | Leaf Green | 6002 | left, bottom, right |
F | Nut Brown | 8011 | left, bottom, right |
Z | Water Blue | 5021 | left, bottom, right |
G | Slate Blue | 7031 | top |
H | Erikaviolett | 4003 | top |
J | Beige | 1001 | top |
K | Curry Yellow | 1027 | top |
L | Yellow Green | 6018 | top |
M | Pastel Orange | 2003 | top |
O | Light Green | 6027 | top |
FAKRA plug adapters
With the right adapters, coaxial plugs outside the FAKRA standard can also be integrated into the system. For example, you can find adapters for Cinch, SMA, SMA, FME or MMCX. When buying, make sure you know whether you need a socket or a plug at the end of the adapter. Angle adapters are available for all FAKRA plugs and sockets for a 90 degree deflection without having to bend the cable. Using suitable adapters, it is also possible to hang several cables one behind the other and thus extend them.
