PoE components - Maximise the power of your network!
You know the problem: you want to connect a device to the network, but there's not a power socket in sight. This is where PoE components come into play! With PoE splitters and injectors, you can send data and power over a single cable so that your devices stay connected wherever you are. But what exactly are these little network helpers and how can they make your everyday life easier?
What is PoE?
PoE stands for "Power over Ethernet". It is a technology that makes it possible to transmit both data and power over the same Ethernet cable. This saves time, costs, and effort during installation, as no separate power cables or sources are required. PoE shows its strength particularly in areas where power connections are rare or difficult to reach.
1st PoE splitter:
- How it works: A PoE splitter takes the combined data and power Ethernet feed from a PoE port (for example, from a PoE switch or injector) and splits the power and data connections into two separate lines.
- Application: It is mainly used with older network devices that are not PoE-capable. With the help of a PoE splitter, these devices can still be operated on a PoE network, as the power and data are supplied separately and in a form that the device can use. For example, a splitter could be used to connect a conventional, non-PoE-capable IP camera to a PoE switch.
- Outputs: Typically, a PoE splitter has an Ethernet output (data only) and a separate power output (e.g. a DC plug).
2nd PoE injector (or midspan PSE):
- How it works: A PoE injector adds power to an Ethernet cable that is transmitting data, enabling a non-PoE switch to power PoE-enabled devices.
- Application: They are particularly useful in scenarios where a network already exists and PoE devices are to be added without having to replace the existing switch with a more expensive PoE-capable switch.
- Inputs and outputs: A PoE injector usually has two Ethernet ports: a "data input" (from your normal switch) and a "PoE output" (which supplies both data and power to your PoE-enabled device). In addition, the injector must be connected to a power source.
When to use what?
- If you have a network device that is not PoE-capable, but you want to use it with a PoE switch or injector, you need a PoE splitter.
- If you have a normal (non-PoE-capable) switch and want to operate one or more PoE devices on it without replacing the entire switch, you need a PoE injector.
It is also important to consider the different PoE standards (such as IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt) as not all injectors and splitters are compatible with all standards. It is important to ensure that both the injector/splitter and the device to be supplied support the same PoE standard.
What should you consider when purchasing PoE components?
Compatibility: Not all PoE devices are the same. Make sure that the components you buy are compatible with your existing devices.
PoE standard: There are different PoE standards, e.g. IEEE 802.3af (PoE), 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3bt. Each standard provides different performance levels. Check which standard your device requires and whether the injector or splitter is compatible with it.
Power requirements: Some devices require more power than others. Before you buy components, check the power requirements of your device and make sure that the injector or switch can fulfil these requirements.
Quality and reliability: Cheaper products can be tempting, but when it comes to network components, quality often pays off. A reliable component minimises downtime and saves money and hassle in the long run.
Future-proof: Consider adding more PoE devices in the future and choose components that can be scaled or expanded.
