SCD41 is a high-precision sensor that uses photoacoustic technology to measure the exact amount of carbon dioxide (in ppm) in the air you breathe. It can also measure temperature and relative humidity.

Too much carbon dioxide has all sorts of unpleasant effects on humans, e.g. it increases your tiredness and lowers your brain power. CO2 concentration is a useful indicator of how well ventilated a room is and also how many people are breathing the same air - a variable that is important to keep an eye on in homes, workplaces and schools. SCD41 is the extended range variant of this sensor, meaning it can detect very high CO2 levels of up to 5,000 ppm, so it could potentially be useful in industrial and laboratory environments too.

We've tested this sensor in some of the tighter ducts and bilges at Pimoroni HQ, and it's remarkable how sensitive it is - you can really see the change in CO2 levels when someone enters or leaves a room, or when doors are opened or closed.

This breakout is compatible with our fancy Breakout Garden system, where using breakouts is so easy that you just plug it into one of the slots and start cultivating your project, tinkering and coding. It's also StemmaQT/Qwiic compatible, so it can plug-n-play with even more microcontrollers and HATS.

We have designed this breakout board so that you can solder the piece of right-angled female header and plug it directly onto the bottom left 5 pins of the GPIO header of your Raspberry Pi (pins 1, 3, 5, 7, 9). The right-angled header also has the advantage of positioning the breakout away from the Pi's CPU to minimise waste heat.

We have put together a Python library along with examples to show you how to get readings from the sensor.
You can also use this breakout with Raspberry Pi Pico and other RP2040 boards, C++ or MicroPython.
