The Grove - Ultrasonic distance sensor is an ultrasonic transducer that uses ultrasonic waves to measure distances. It has an ultrasonic transmitter and a receiver, making it an ultrasonic transceiver. The sensor can detect distances in the range from 3 cm to 350 cm with an accuracy of up to 2 mm. The measurement is based on the principle of sound propagation time measurement: the transmitter generates an ultrasonic wave with a frequency of 40 kHz. When this hits an object, it is reflected and picked up by the receiver. The distance to the object is determined by calculating the time span between transmission and reception and applying the speed of sound in air (340 m/s).
Compared to conventional modules such as the HC-SR04, the Grove ultrasonic distance sensor integrates a single-chip microcontroller. This utilises time-division multiplexing, whereby transmit and receive signals are transmitted via the same pin. This means that only one I/O pin is required. In addition, this module supports both 5 V and 3.3 V operating voltage and is therefore directly compatible with the I/O pins of a Raspberry Pi, without additional level converters.
The module is suitable for applications such as distance measurement, ultrasonic detection, proximity alarms or as a sensor in intelligent vehicles. It is integrated via the Grove connection, which makes it easy to use without soldering. The output is via a PWM signal (pulse width modulation). Complete documentation and libraries are available for common development environments such as Arduino, Python and Codecraft.
The sensor emits an ultrasonic signal via the Trig pin. If the signal is reflected by an object, the echo pin receives the returning wave. The measured transit time enables the distance to be calculated.
