What is an oscilloscope and what is it used for?

An oscilloscope is an electronic measuring device that can be used to determine and analyze a voltage curve over a certain period of time. Phase shifts and sensor pulses can also be measured with an oscilloscope. The respective period cannot be detected by the human eye, but can be visualized on a display to enable an evaluation of the voltage curve.

Whereas in the past only analog devices were used, today digital oscilloscopes are predominantly used. These have the advantage that they can display a relatively large number of parameters. The devices are usually powered by a rechargeable battery, but USB-powered oscilloscopes are not uncommon. These have the advantage that they can also be easily connected to a computer, which opens up many more possibilities with regard to potential IoT projects. In addition, in this case the voltage curve can be shown via the display of the respective computer.

Oscilloscopes are used in technical fields to check the quality of signals or find faults in circuits. Industries in which the devices are used particularly frequently include engineering, automotive manufacturing, aerospace, IT and telecommunications. Oscilloscope: This is how simple it works

The operating principle of a digital oscilloscope is relatively simple. First, the input signal to be measured is analog amplified and filtered. The resulting signal amplitude is then modified by an A/D converter so that the various signal stages can be visualized. The digitized values are then transferred to a memory and finally shown on a display with the help of an integrated processor.

Incidentally, an oscilloscope can also be used to measure electric current - but only indirectly, by measuring the voltage drop across a measuring resistor. Current measurement with an oscilloscope is also possible using a current transformer or a current probe.

What should you look for when buying an oscilloscope?

Before you decide on a particular oscilloscope, you should definitely take a look at the technical specifications, because there are sometimes serious differences. The most important criterion is the bandwidth of the device. This determines the frequency range that the oscilloscope can record or display. If you are a passionate hobby tester, a bandwidth of 200 KHz may be sufficient, but the rise times of the signals also play a significant role in determining the ideal minimum value. Note that oscilloscopes with a higher bandwidth generally cost more.

Furthermore, you should make sure that the model you favor has a sufficient number of channels. Some oscilloscopes that you can find in the Berrybase range have four inputs, while others - especially more compact devices - are only equipped with one channel. But even that can be sufficient depending on the application.

Furthermore, there are different variants with individual characteristics. Handheld oscilloscopes, for example, are particularly compact and thus perfectly suited if you are often on the road.
