These NeoPixel strips have 144 digitally addressable pixel mini LEDs per metre and are very affordable. They are only 7.5 mm wide - 5 mm if you remove the strip from the housing. This is the strip with white flex PCB, it's identical to the black 144 LED/meter strip except it has a different solder resist on the flex strip There are a few things to watch out for: These LEDs consume a maximum of about 9.5 watts (~2 amps at 5V) per metre. The maximum rated power assumes that all LEDs are completely white. Normally the actual current for coloured designs is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum current. A good power supply is crucial! Secondly, to achieve high density, the controller chip is inside the LED, which is kind of cool, but also means that the chip only uses a single pin for input and a single pin for output. The protocol used is very very timing specific and can only be controlled by microcontrollers with a highly repeatable timing accuracy of 100nS. We have example code for use with the Arduino Uno/Mega microcontroller at 8MHz and 16MHz, and with a little effort you can use it with the Raspberry Pi, or Beagle Bone Black, but it will not work with the Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessor or any processor slower than 8MHz. Due to the way the pixels are controlled by an Arduino, the entire strip needs to be buffered in memory, and we have found that many Arduino UNO projects only have about 1500 bytes of RAM available after all the extras have been built in - enough for about 500 LED pixels. If you want to control the whole strip and include some other libraries, you may need a Mega. There are 144 RGB LEDs per metre, and you can control each LED individually! Yes, that's right, this is the digitally addressable type of LED strip. You can set the colour of the red, green and blue component of each LED with 8-bit PWM precision (i.e. 24-bit colour per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers that are linked upwards on the strip, so that you can shorten or lengthen the strip. Only 1 digital output pin is required to send data downwards. The PWM is built into each LED chip so that, after a colour has been set, it will modulate it accordingly, even if it is no longer being controlled. The strip is made of flexible PCB material and comes with a weatherproof sheath. You can cut it stuff quite easily with a wire cutter, there are cut lines every 7 mm (1 LED each). Solder to the 0.1" copper pads and you're ready to go. Of course, you can also connect the strips together to make them longer. Just make sure you know how much power you need! You must use a 5V DC power supply to power these strips, do not use more than 6V or you may destroy the entire strip! The eTape liquid level sensor is a solid-state sensor with a resistance output that changes with the liquid level. It eliminates the need for bulky mechanical floats and can be easily connected to electronic control systems. The envelope of the eTape sensor is compressed by the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid in which it is immersed. This leads to a change in resistance that corresponds to the distance between the top of the sensor and the surface of the liquid. The output resistance of the sensor is inversely proportional to the height of the liquid: the lower the liquid level, the higher the output resistance; the higher the liquid level, the lower the output resistance. This is a very unique sensor. We have yet to see anything else that is affordable and accurate for measuring liquid levels. This sensor seems like a handy addition to a hydroponic, aquarium, fountain or pool controller, or perhaps for measuring a rain pipe. This particular sensor is the 5" version, and it includes a 4-pin connector and a 560Ω 5% resistor. The connector is such that you don't have to solder directly to the sensitive pins. Instead, you simply solder to the connector and plug it onto the sensor. Since the sensor has a resistor, it is easy to read it with an ADC pin of the microcontroller. RGB pixels are digitally controllable lights that you can set to any colour or animate. Each round 'pixel cluster' contains 3 RGB LEDs and a controller chip soldered onto a circuit board. The pixel is then encased in a clear white 'dot' to make it weatherproof. These are quite large pixels, but they are easy to assemble, with two plastic flanges. They are typically used to make outdoor signs. Compared to our other LED dots, these are much larger and much brighter, good for larger installations. The pixels are connected via a 4-core cable. +12VDC, ground, data and clock. The data is shifted down from one pixel to the next, so you can easily cut the strand or add more to the end. Each dot is digitally controlled, with an internal 8-bit PWM LED driver (24-bit colour for 16 million different hues). The pixels need to be clocked by a microcontroller, we have linked an example code below that works on an Arduino, it should be easy to adapt to any other microcontroller. The pixels use 3 x 5050 RGB LEDs, and the dot has a full 180 degree colour spread due to the translucent nature. All LEDs are controlled at once, so you cannot have one pixel with the three LEDs of different colours.
