SparkFun has teamed up with CircuitDojo to present the SparkFun nRF9160 Thing Plus with the powerful Nordic nRF9160 microcontroller in a Feather-compatible package. This small chip is capable of supporting both CAT M1 LTE and NB-IoT mobile communications and is designed to work with Zephyr, the leading RTOS for embedded development. To make using the Thing Plus even easier, this board utilises our handy Qwiic Connect system, meaning no soldering or shielding is required to connect it to the rest of your system!
Not only can you take advantage of Nordic's advanced power states, but you can also put the device into a low-power standby state. Lab measurements put this mode at around 2µA of power. 2µA! The device also has a 3.3 V buck boost, which helps to get as many mWh as possible out of the batteries.
No batteries? No problem! Power your nRF9160 Thing Plus externally via a USB-C cable. Leave it switched on at all times for high availability scenarios.
Do you want to persist data? The nRF9160 Thing Plus has a 4 MB external flash memory for storing data in offline mode. Use the external flash with a file system such as LitteFS and you have a project you can clean up with!
