A sparkling matrix with over a hundred fantastic RGB LEDs for all your rainbow needs and some handy buttons - perfect for the Raspberry Pi Pico!

We've customised our famous Unicorn setup to fit neatly on the back of your Pico - with a neat 7x16 matrix (that's 112 RGB LEDs!) it's certainly the smartest backpack around) it's certainly the slickest backpack around. The four tactile buttons can be used to switch between modes, as controls for simple games or to adjust the brightness.

It's possible to control the colour and brightness of each LED individually, so you can use it to display animations, text, simple images and more. Turn it into a mini photo FX light, a smart status light for Zoom, use it to display colourful tickers on your fridge, or just enjoy some pretty animations.

Use the RP2040's programmable IOs (PIOs) The exciting thing is that these LEDs are fully controlled by the RP2040 microcontroller's programmable IO function, so they are updated in the background with very low CPU usage. The programmable IOs are so fast that we can achieve a resolution of 14 bits instead of the usual 8 bits for LED drivers.

We use these extra bits of resolution to apply gamma correction to the displayed colours, which means that the colour gradients are smooth and linear. The visual quality is noticeably better.

This means that the LEDs perform excellently across the entire brightness range and don't handle lower brightness levels badly. You don't really have to worry about the details (although we think they're interesting!) as our software library does it all for you in the background.

A Raspberry Pi Pico is not included!

Getting started

The labels on the bottom of the Pico Unicorn Pack show you which way to connect it to your Pico - just match the USB connector with the markings on the board.

The easiest way to start programming our Pico add-ons is to download and copy the customised MicroPython image to your Pico. It contains all the libraries you need!
