At the heart of this clever system is the Grow HAT Mini. This Raspberry Pi Mini HAT has a tiny screen to keep an eye on the status of the system, four tactile buttons for navigation and an inbuilt piezo buzzer that politely asks for your attention when your plants need you. There's also a light sensor, which we've used in our code example, to stop the alarm at night. We've covered the board with little golden flowers because we love you.
There are three connections on the board for our capacitive humidity sensors (sold separately) so you can measure the humidity in three different pots. Because there are no exposed electrodes, capacitive sensors are much less susceptible to corrosion over time than the old resistance sensors. They even have a little field where you can label them with plant names (we think 'Pete' is a great plant name).
On the back of the Grow HAT Mini are three more connections that you can use to switch 5 V low-current devices such as pumps, motors, valves, solenoid valves or lamps on and off. There are also a number of broken out I2C ports which are perfect for expanding with an I2C breakout (like the ones in our Breakout Garden range). The ability to add more sensors and connect additional devices means you can expand your budding grow system into something much more powerful and sophisticated - a proper little smart greenhouse for your desk (or your spaceship, classroom or apocalyptic bunker!)

Optimize your Raspberry Pi - with Pimoroni
